| Grading | (1) Term Mark 40% (best 3 out of 4 tests);
(2) Final Examination 60%. Term Mark There will be four 50-minute tests hold in the regular tutorial hours on September 25, October 16, October 30 and November 13. Students are expected to take all 4 tests, best 3 out of 4 will be counted. There are no make-up tests. In case when a student misses more than one test due to illness (supported by a doctor note), jury duty or extreme personal misfortune, the term mark may be pro-rated. Please see the instructor should such a case arise. It is each student's responsibility to pick up the marked test from the TA. Usually the test papers are distributed in the tutorial session following the date of the test. Final Examination This is a 3- hour exam scheduled by the University. The exam is taking place during the period of December 4 - 20 (including Saturdays), 2008. It is each student's responsibility to be available at the time of the examination. In particular, no travel plans should be made until the examination schedule is published. It is each student's responsibility to find out the correct date and time of the exam and the room where it takes place. Note: you must obtain at least 50% of total and at least 30% of the final exam mark to pass the course. Students who do not present any term work and are absent on the final examination will be assigned the grade of FND (Fail No Deferral). This means that the student is not eligible to write a deferred examination. If it happens that you have missed the examination, then you may be eligible for a deferred exam, provided that you have a doctor note or another supporting document. The Registrar's Office is the one that makes this decision. You should apply there with the supporting documents. |

| Diagnostic Test |
***** We shall again be running a diagnostic test in MATH 1009 this year. The test will be written during your tutorials on Thursday, September 11, Friday, September 12, and Tuesday, September 16. The School of Business will provide us with senior undergraduate students to administer the test on September 11 and 12. Our Math and Stat TA's assigned to the Tuesday tutorials will proctor on September 16. Attached as a pdf file is information on the diagnostic, and a practice test. This file, along with other practice questions, is also available at Elena Devdariani's website at http://mathstat.carleton.ca/~elenad/ Please copy the pdf attachment to this email and provide it as a handout to students in your first class. Please also alert them to the additional material on Elena's website, and when the diagnostic will be written for your section. It would be ideal if you would announce this during each of your first few lectures, put it in your course outline, and send an email to your class as well. I have discussed assigning marks to the diagnostic with members of the School of Business, Wayne Horn, and Elena Devdariani (the course coordinator). After some discussion, we agreed to assign 5% BONUS MARKS to the diagnostic as an incentive to write it, and as a further reward to those who do well. For students who do not perform well on the diagnostic, we are attempting, jointly with the School of Business, to find instructors to teach review sessions on Saturday for a six week period starting on September 20. I hope that more information on this will follow soon. ***** |
